If you suspect asbestos before work starts
Do not drill, cut, sand, scrape or break the material. Check the asbestos register or survey if the building has one. If it does not, or the material is not listed, treat it as asbestos and report it to the person in charge. Work does not proceed on that material until it has been sampled and either cleared or a plan of work agreed.
If material has been disturbed
Stop work immediately. Keep everyone out of the area and close doors. Do not sweep, brush or use a household vacuum; dry cleaning spreads fibres. Do not remove dust from clothing by brushing; if contaminated, leave clothing in the area for decontamination or bag it. Report to the supervisor, who arranges for the area to be assessed and, if necessary, cleaned by a competent asbestos contractor with wet methods and Class H vacuum equipment. Record the incident and the people present.
Sampling and removal
A sample taken by a trained person, wetted and double bagged, goes to an accredited laboratory for analysis. If asbestos is confirmed the options are to manage it in place if it is in good condition and unlikely to be disturbed, to encapsulate or seal it, or to remove it. Removal is planned, risk assessed and, for all but low risk sporadic work, notified to the HSA fourteen days in advance and carried out by a competent contractor.
At home
Homeowners have no legal duty to remove asbestos in good condition. For a damaged garage roof or a renovation that will disturb it, use an asbestos contractor.
