When is refresher training required?

3. After disturbing asbestos - Following any disturbance of an ACM or a near-miss
4. Knowledge gaps - If a supervisor or audit identifies gaps in asbestos awareness
5. Employer policy - Some employers require annual training regardless of certificate status
6. Regulatory changes - If significant changes to the asbestos regulations or HSA guidance occur

Think of your Asbestos Awareness Certificate like a driving licence - it proves you completed training, but maintaining your skills requires ongoing awareness and practice.

Employer requirements and expectations

While the 3-year standard applies generally, different industries and employers may have stricter requirements:

Construction and demolition

Construction, refurbishment and demolition companies often require annual refresher training, especially on major sites where older buildings are stripped out. This may be combined with Safe Pass renewal and other safety briefings.

Maintenance and facilities

Facilities, caretaking and housing maintenance teams managing older building stock frequently provide annual refreshers or toolbox talks, since staff work daily where asbestos may be present.

Building services trades

Employers of electricians, plumbers and heating engineers often refresh awareness regularly, as these trades routinely work around old lagging, panels and flues. Full certification renewal typically still follows the 3-year cycle.

What happens when your certificate expires?

An expired Asbestos Awareness Certificate does not automatically prevent you from working, but it does create compliance issues:

• Your employer may not be able to demonstrate adequate training provision
• Insurance coverage may be affected in case of an injury claim
• HSA inspectors may view expired certificates as a compliance failure
• You may be required to complete training before continuing certain duties

It is always better to renew before expiry rather than letting your certificate lapse.
